TIAC Encourages Canada’s Tourism Industry to Help Support the Relief Efforts in Haiti

As the world begins to understand the full impact of the January 12th earthquake in Haiti, the need to help in the relief efforts is clear. The International Red Cross estimates that more than three million residents of Haiti have been affected by the earthquake, with estimates of the death toll in the tens of thousands. TIAC wishes to express its profound sympathies to the people of Haiti, and encourages our members and partners in the Canadian tourism sector to support the ongoing relief efforts.

The following are a few of the agencies that are accepting donations at this time:

The Canadian Red Cross is accepting donations to support International Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti. Canadians who wish to give may donate online at www.redcross.ca; by phone at 1-800-418-1111; or by visiting any Red Cross office.

The Salvation Army in Canada is sending $100,000 US in aid and has started a fundraising campaign. You can also use your cellphone to send a donation by text message. Cellphone users can send donations of $5 by texting the word "Haiti" to 45678 through a system set up by the Mobile Giving Foundation, a group that enables charities to collect money by text messages.

UNICEF Canada is taking donations for the earthquake in Haiti. An income tax receipt will be issued for all donations $25 or more. For donations less than $25, receipts will be issued upon request. Please email secretary@unicef.ca or call 1-800-567-4483.
